Winter Social Rides Club runs take place throughout the Winter. On Saturday riders meet at the Quaterbridge at 9.30am and Sunday runs depart from the NSC Pavilion from 9.15am. The 'North Plane Riders' depart from IOM Bank, Kirk Michael on Saturdays at 9.30am. The runs are subject to the weather and stop at a cafe en route. Please bring a spare tube and pump and it is advisable to wear a helmet.

Sport Aid Grant Applications

Several local juvenile cyclists will be waiting for their postie with baited breath over the next couple of days to see if they have been accepted on to the British Cycling Talent Team. On Saturday the 'hopefuls' were involved in more sessions at Manchester Velodrome taking part in BMX and track training sessions

Pre Christmas Social Ride

Mann & Partners Millennium Way Relay

The Millennium Way Relay is fast approaching, entries close at noon Thursday December 18.

The 'new look' cycling Association racing calendar will be for sale at cycling outlets Bikestyle and Eurocycles this weekend. The calendar has been kindly sponsored by 12 companies and features some interesting cycling photographs past and present as well as all the details of local events throughout the year. At £3 the calendars will make ideal stocking fillers for family and friends.

Kelly Down Under

Mark Kelly is currently 'down under' in Sydney preparing for the 2004 Season lodging with long time friend Dave Heaven. Dave works for RIDE magazine, the biggest cycling magazine in Australia and is intending to introduce Mark to 'local' riders such as Brad McGee , Baden Cooke, Matt White plus other Australian professionals to train with over the coming months. Mark is planning to do as many miles as possible while in Australia riding up to seven hours a day and hopes to include some road and track racing. This is all preparation for the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne so Mark will be looking out for good contacts and a base to see what the Australian's are doing in the run up to the Games, Mark will also be looking around for invitations for preparation races in 2005.
Tomorrow (Saturday) Mark attends the Australian Federation Annual Dinner.

Mountain Bike Winter Series

Round two of the Manx Mountain Bike Club's Winter Series takes place this Saturday afternoon at Chibannagh Plantation. The event is open to all abilities, male or female, children are also welcome but must be 12 years of age and over. The race is ideal for newcomers as the event duration is only approximately 45 minutes. There will also be a race within a race in the form of a duathlon, the running leg will take place one week later (December 6) at Glen Maye in conjunction with the last round of the Winter Hill League. Signing on takes place in the Braaid Hall from 1pm with the event starting at 2pm followed by tea and cakes afterwards back at the Braaid Hall. Busy Weeks Ahead For Youth Cyclists

Manx Road Club cyclists Jon Bellis, Peter Kennaugh jnr. and Scott Flynn, plus Mark Redhead, Ashley Whipp and Elliott Moore (TSP) travel to British Cycling HQ, Manchester, next week for additional testing and interviews with the Talent Team management, coaches and top riders who have come up through the ranks and are now at the top of their sport. Parents will also be interviewed enabling them to see for themselves the commitment required by the parents and their off spring in the years ahead should they get a placement. Two weeks later the cyclists return to Manchester to attend a training camp where they will get a taster of what is involved.

With two riders passing the stage two required index outright and the others close enough to be put forward for stage three for re testing, it proves the potential is there for the future of Manx cycling. Due to the limited number of spaces available (four on the tracking program in the North West making 20 places nationally ) passing the required targets does not mean automatic selection onto the program, however those who attend stage three will enjoy the experience gained from their attendance, in the knowledge that having reached this far, they have got 'the engine' required to go places in their cycling careers and perhaps become future Olympic champions!

Several local cyclists have recently been tested by British Cyclings Talent Team. Now BC have featured the tests in an article on their site, at the end of the feature it states "Exceptional performances in either the Sprint or Endurance Tests are the keys to progression – but the key word is “Exceptional”. Cross Win for Guymer

Manx Road Club rider Steve Guymer proved his cyclo cross ability to be as good as his road ability with victory in the City RC promotion based on a course in the grounds of Bishop Burton College, East Yorkshire on Sunday. The event was round four of the Yorkshire Cyclo Cross Series.

20 or so riders turned out for today's club ride in dry but blustery conditions. The group rode to Ard Jekyll Cafe via Peel where they met up with former World Points Champion Chris Newton for a chat and cup of tea.

There is to be a club run from the NSC gates this Saturday at 9.30am for a short ride to the Ard Jekyll Cafe to meet up with 2002 World Points Champion Chris Newton. Signing on takes place at the Braaid Hall from 1pm with racing at 2pm.The event is open to all, whatever their ability, but competitors must be aged 12 years or older and parental consents will be required for under 18's. The course will be on the 'plateau' at the top of the plantation where hills are kept to a minimum. All rounds will have a duration of approximately 45 minutes thus making the events ideal for first timers. After the event refreshments will be available in the Braaid Hall. CA Racing Calendar

The IOM CA are to produce a new style calendar for the 2004 season in the form of a professionally produced product with selected photos displayed on each of the months including all the event dates for all forms of cycle sport on the Island. Most of the months have been sponsored to the tune of £50, if anyone out there would like to sponsor a month with their company logo and details please contact Peter on 472509. It is hoped the calendars will be for sale by the beginning of December.

Off Road Duathlon

The Manx Mountain bike Club and Manx Fell Runners are to run a duathlon style event to be staged over two consecutive weekends. The first leg will be round two of the MMBC Winter Series at Chibanagh Plantation on Saturday November 29 with the running event following one week later at round round three of the Walker Brothers sponsored Winter Hill League organised by the Manx Fell Runners, the date for this event is Saturday December 6. This will be ideal preparation for the forthcoming Millennium Way Relay on Boxing Day. If the duathlon proves to be popular the MMBC will promote a full off road duathlon consisting of two running legs and one cycle leg in the new year. More details soon.

Winter Hill Series

The Manx Fell Runners are promoting the first round of their popular hill league at Glen Roy Farm (bottom of the Windy Corner track) this Saturday at 1.30pm, these events are an ideal form of cross training for cyclists and are great fun to compete in. The event should be no more than three miles in duration and at only £2 per race or £5 for the three event series is great value.

It is hoped that one of the events will count towards a duathlon style event along with one of the mountain bike winter handicap series that take part commencing Saturday November 1, more details soon.

Cycling Facilities

British Cycling officials spent most of Wednesday checking out possible future cycling facilities for local cyclists. As traffic conditions look set to worsen for the foreseeable future we need to recognise that what we have always taken for granted over the years is no longer viable from a safety point of view especially with children in mind, put simply bike racing needs to change into a facility based sport so that more training, coaching and leisure cycling takes place off the public roads. Information collected will then be placed in the hands of British Cycling's Facility Officer, Dave Cockram who will then present us with ideas on the best way forward

Talent Test

A total of 11 (nine boys and two girls) took part in the British Team Talent testing sessions at the NSC on Tuesday evening, Talent coaches Brian Barton and Paul Evans put the riders through a rigorous set of tests on bikes connected to electronic power testing equiptment. The results of the tests wil lthen be collated before being sent to the riders in person during the first week in November.

BC Talent Test Update

To save any confusion please note that the Talent Team Tests will be taking place on Tuesday evening at the 'Out Door Social Centre' next to the Manx Harriers Pavilion and not in the main NSC building. The first batch of tests commence at 5.30pm

There is a date error on the information sheet that was sent out to the riders taking part in the Talent Test, as most of you will have probably realised by now, the date should read 21st October and not the12th.

All local BC coaches are most welcome to attend the tests on Tuesday evening.

MMBC Winter Series

Stuart Slack Parish Ride

The 86 mile Stuart Slack Parish Ride takes place from the NSC this Sunday with three different start times dependent on ability. The first group sets off at 8.30am followed by an intermediate group at 9am with the 'serious' riders at 9.30am. The riders will be setting off in the opposite direction with a lunch stop at St. Johns Football Club.

Talent Tests

British Cycling Team coaches will be on the Island next Tuesday (October 21) to carry out tests on several local Juvenile cyclists who's names have been forwarded for stage two testing for possible inclusion on the British Talent Team. Additional cyclists aged between 13 and 15 years of age who wish to be considered for testing please contact Peter Kennaugh on 472509 for advice and information.

British Cycling Coaching Visit

British Cycling's Coaching and Education Officer, Keith Flory will be visiting local BC coaches at the NSC this coming Saturday for a 'top up' session covering all aspects of coaching. Keith will be available to answer any questions or problems faced by the Island cycling coaches. The session commences at 10am and should conclude no later than 5pm.

Annual Dinner

The Annual Dinner and Prize Presentation takes place on Saturday November 8 at the Empress Hotel, Douglas. The guest will be former world points champion Chris Newton. The Cycling Association are presently updating and ratifying this years time trial records for inclusion in the 2004 racing calendar, would all cyclists who feel they have set individual, team or native records, including veteran, ladies and juvenile, please email or contact Peter Kennaugh (472509) with their details including information such as venue, date, course, time recorded and previous holder.

Trophies and Awards

Would all holders of perpetual cycling awards please return them polished and engraved to Bikestyle, Bucks Road, no later than Friday October 24 so club representatives can prepare for the forthcoming Cycling Assocciation Presentation Night.

Tour of Scotland

The first details of the Tour of Scotland are coming to light. The five-day race has been approved by the UCI and will run from May 26-30. It will be categorised as a 2.3 level stage race, which should ensure a decent field of pro riders, many of whom will no doubt be well into their preparations for the Tour de France, which follows little more than five weeks later.

Talking ot the Tour, it now seems unlikley that London will host the 2006 start, there has been a lot of competition from all the major European cities to host the start, plus the political fact that London and Paris are in competition to host the 2012 Olympics, don't lose hope though, London is in talks to host the event in 2007,

Rochie Third In Irish Worlds Qualifier

Ireland’s top time trialists clashed today (Saturday) in a bid to win selection for next month's world championships in Hamilton, Canada. One place was up for grabs in the elite time trial and the fastest over today's course in Ballyboughil, North County Dublin, would win a place on the Hamilton bound squad. In the end it was David McCann who came out on top with almost a minute to spare over second placed David O'Loughlin with Andrew Roche in third a further 21 seconds behind. Brief results here

Manx Mountain Bike Club Winter Series

To avoid a clash with the Ramsey Triathlon the following day, the MMBC Winter Series will now commence on Saturday November 1. The event will be open to men and women competitors with junior boys and girls also welcome but must be 12 years and older. The emphasis will be on having fun with race duration of approximatley 45 minutes. The first round will take place at Chibbanagh Plantation on a 'flattish' course, with signing on from 1.30pm followed by racing at 2pm prompt. This event is an ideal introduction to mountain bike racing for those new to the sport.

Also planned is a duathlon style event staged over two days with the running stage comprising of a round of the Manx Fell Runners' Winter Hill League followed by a round of the MMBC Winter Series, more details soon.

Provisional Dates: Round 1: Saturday November 1. Round 2: Saturday November 29. Round 3: Saturday January 10 2004. Round 4: Sarurday February 7 2004.

Ramsey Sprint Triathlon

This years Ramsey Sprint Triathlon ( in aid of the Mighty Oak ) takes place on Sunday October 5 from Ramsey Pool at 1pm. There will be an individual and team competition comprising of a 750 metre swim, 20k bike ride and to finish off, a 5k run. Rob Rohrer 25

Father of two, Andrew Roche produced yet another amazing ride to win the Rob Rohrer 25 mile time trial on the Ballaugh course, second place went to Rob Holden with first veteran, Peter Gage coming home in third overall. Fastest lady was Jacqui Fletcher and winner of the 9.7 mile juvenile event was Peter Kennaugh. full results here

Cycle Week Dropped

It is a sad day for Manx and UK cycling in general with the announcment that Manx International Cycle Week has been dropped from next year's Manx sporting calendar. The Manx Viking Wheelers and the Organising Committee say the decision of the Department of Tourism and Leisure to no longer financially support the event in its present format has left them with no alternative.The festival was started by the late Curwen Clague back in 1934.

GHS Final

Rob Rohrer 25 Mile Time Trial

The Rob Rohrer 25 mile time trial takes place on Sunday September 21 from Ballaugh starting at 9.30am. There will also be a juvenile 9.7 mile time trial for those aged 12 and over. All competitors will receive a free barbeque at the Wildlife Park from 12 noon. Friends and family are most welcome ( adults £5 children £2.50 )

Time Trial Championship

Alex Forrest 2 Up & Presentation

There was an impressive entry for Wednesday evening's Alex Forrest 2 Up. After the time trial the Sulby Pub marquee was the venue for the prize presentation of the Isle of Man Bank 10 League and the Bike Style Handicap series. After the presentation CA Chairman Tony Varley thanked 10 League organiser Les Millar, who is standing down after many years at the helm. Jim Cottier takes over for next years series.

Record Entry for End to End

A record entry of 171 riders have entered this year's End to End Mountain Bike Challenge, the Bike Style sponsored event sets of from the Point of Ayre in two waves with the 136 'challenge' class starting at 10 am followed by the 28 riders in the 'competition' class one hour later.

Off Island Racing

It was a case of rough and tumble for some at Sundays National Youth Circuit Championships on the impressive Preston Arena circuit. In the under 16 championship over half the field were involved in a high speed pile up in the last kilometre followed by yet another crash involving the dozen or so riders who escaped the first incident, this time in the final 200 metres. It was a great shame for the Manx riders as Jon Bellis, Warren Flynn and Steve Guymer (all MRC) along with Ashley and Arron Whipp from the TSP squad were all mixing well and putting in some good attacks with the cream of British cycling. Aaron did manage to miss most of the carnage to finish a good ninth.

There was some misfortune for Cayley Ennett (TSP)in the under 16 girls event when the race was stopped due to an accident with six laps remaining when Cayley was in what could have been a race winning move along with three other riders. After the re start Caley came home in an impressive fifth place with a great ride from Laura Gage (TSP) in 10th

Pre race favourite Mark McNally (Liverpool Century) finished out of the medals after he and Peter Kennaugh (MRC) were baulked by a slowing rider in the final 200 metres in the under 14 championship with Peter salvaging ninth at the line. Scott Flynn (MRC), TSP's Mark Christian and Matthew Looker all had gutsy rides with Mark making a bid for freedom at mid distance only be brought back by the bunch.

Caroline O,Neill (TSP) rode well to finish with the bunch in the under 14 girls event

Due to reduced entries the under 12 girls and boys rode together with first over the line picking up the champions jersey and to the delight of the strong Cardiff contingent and girl power in general Sophie Terry (Maindey Flyers) took the honours. Chris Whorrall rode strongly for third with Mathieu Marshall coming home in sixth, Matthew Looker eighth and Oliver Shimmin (All TSP) ninth

Bike Style Round 6 and Overall

The final round of the Bike Style handicap series took place last night in sunny but breezy conditions at Jurby. Aaron Livsey (EVCC) took the honors ahead of David Harrison (TSP) with Trevor Kirkwood (MRC) in third, Claire Moore (MVW) claimed the Ladies prize in fourth, mountain biker Andrew Jowett (EVCC) was fifth and Peter O'Shea (MVW) came in sixth, results here

Overall, Dave Cormican (MVW) won the series ahead of second placed Richard Fletcher (EVCC) with Jon Bellis (MRC) in third, Ashley Whipp (TSP) was fourth, Dave Taylor (MRC) fifth and Mike Kelly (MRC) finished in sixth position. Overall here

Bike Style Handicap

Manx Road Club's Jonathon Bellis easily won the bunch sprint in the latest round of the Bike Style handicap series at Jurby on Thursday evening. Good handicapping by the organisers saw the race come together on the last lap of the 32 mile, seven lap race, virtually the whole race contested the sprint with Bellis, fresh from the recent Kerry Youth Tour, taking the sprint by over a bike length from Richard Fletcher and Ashley Whipp in equal second, veteran Mike Kelly, under guidance from Son Mark, was fourth. Peter Kennaugh jnr also recently returned from Kerry was fifth and ever improving Trevor Kirkwood completed the top six. Results here

Manchester Youth Tour Cancelled

This year's Manchester International Youth Tour due to take place between August 22 and 25 has been cancelled. Organiser Dave Bishop said the Parks Department have withdrawn permission for cycle racing to be staged on any of their public park circuits in the Manchester area. Earlier in the year Manchester City Council placed a blanket ban on all events in Albert Square, the venue for the last stage of the event.
It is a great shame as this event was well supported by Manx cyclists with many victories going to local riders. Bishop stated that every effort will be made to promote the event next year.

50 Mile Time Trial

Help needed in Cycling Week

If anyone is able to assist in the following areas, their help would be much appreciated: Bray Hill Road Closure This is the smallest job, but perhaps the most urgent. Help is needed to rope-off the first 10 roads (Bray Hill) on the TT course on Thursday 24th and Friday 25th. This is just a few minutes work, for about four people, at about 09.30 on each of the two days. There has been a problem in previous years where the race has virtually caught-up with the existing road closure team as they close all the roads around the course. Having a separate team to do Bray Hill, will enable them to get a head-start without closing the roads earlier than is necessary. Cars & Drivers The quote for the number of hire cars necessary to carry race officials during the Road Races came to £4000, which our limited budget simply cannot afford. If you would be prepared act as chauffeur in your own car, for a race official during one or more of any of the Road Races, please let us know. Petrol expenses will be paid to anyone offering this service. The perfect car for this job is a large saloon with a sun-roof, but no reasonable offer will be refused! Marshals, Marshals, Marshals As usual, any marshalling help, at any time, on any one or more of the six days of racing, would be much appreciated. British Cycling have published the final overall positions for the National Circuit Series.
Ashley Whipp( Team Scottish Provident) finished eighth in the competitive under 16 series with Warren Flynn (Manx Road Club) in 19th, Aaron Whipp (TSP), Jonathan Bellis (TSP) and Steven Guymer (MRC) finished equal 32nd. The series was dominated by Ian Stannard (Team Luciano Cycles)
Mark Mc Nally (Liverpool Century) won the under 14 series with Peter Kennaugh (MRC), the winner of round three, second and Scott Flynn (MRC) in 18th.
First round winner Christopher Whorrall (TSP) finished third in the under 12 event just piping Caroline O'Neill (TSP) at the final round in fourth place. Tim kennaugh (MRC) was 12th. Jessica Stoddard ( Interbike RT-Diavolo) won the series with the under 14 girls often proving too strong for the younger boys.
Thomas Mazzone (TSP) was the top local finisher in the under 10 series in fourth position, Jonathan Cregeen (TSP) was 12th and Josh Cowie (TSP) in 18th, the winner was Tom Gallacher ( Welwyn Wheelers )

Mark Kelly to Ride European Under 23 Championships

Mark Kelly has been selected by Great Britain to ride the European Under 23 Road Race and Time Trial Championships. The time trial is on the August 15 and the Road Race on the 17th. They will be held in Athens, Greece. The Championships will be a trial run for the Olympics organisation as the races will be held on the Olympic course.
Mark is looking forward to them and will hopefully concentate on the Time Trial. Preparation starts with a short fast race on Tuesday followed by the Nocturne de Eauze, a 90km circuit race at night.

Snaefell MTB race Sunday 29th June 2003 has had to be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.

The Bikestyle Summer series 2003 will now commence with the race planned at Arrassey Plantation on 27th July. Sunday's cancelled race will be rescheduled at a later date as part of the series. Other dates & venues for the Summer series will be advised in due course.

Good Form Continues For Cav

Newcastle under Lyme Open Track Meeting

Mark Cavendish attended the first Open Track Meeting held for 11 years at Newcastle under Lyme at the weekend, producing fast and exciting racing under clear blue skies. The two main events were the 2nd round of the British Cycling National Sprinters League sponsored by Brian Rourke Cycles and the final event the Parkers International 20km scratch race in which Cav finished runner up behind top trackie James Taylor. Cav also produced the goods in the Points and Devil event. If that wasn't enough Cav travels to Manchester for more track training before flying to Guernsey for the Island Games this weekend. results here

Brian Walmsley, organiser of Sunday’s North West Regional Championships was left with a pair of wheels after the event which are so far unclaimed. They were left close to the judging platform at the finish used for the Youth races.

Cycle Week News

Due to the incorrect publication of the 27th June as the International Cycling Week closing date in the British Cycling Racing Calendar and website, organisers have confirmed that entries will now be accepted up to that date.

The closing date for the European Masters Road Race Championships remains as 1st July 2003.

The latest addition to the Isle of Man International Cycling Week 2003 is a team of Under 23’s from the Tuscany region of Italy. Already a team from Russia has entered along with the regulars from France, Belgium and Holland.

The Sunday night Douglas hill-climb has been switched to a new course on Summer Hill at the end of the promenade. The original course from Castle Mona to Falcon Cliff has been ruled out due to the increasing number of parked cars on both sides of the climb and the ongoing building works as a result of the major fire earlier this year.

North West Regional Championships

The Manx youngsters spent Sunday at a sunny Birkenhead Park competing in the North West Regional Championships, Mark Cavendish got the procedings off to a good start with victory in the Junior race, however his result would not stand as Mark's first claim team is Dataphonics, who are not a North West Division registered team. Lee Wagstaffe finished in sixth. Joshua Cowie took victory in the under 10 race with Thomas Mazzone third and Jonathan Cregeen fifth. As expected Christopher Whorrall won the under 12 race, James Berry had a great race to finish second with Matheu Marshall third, Tim Kennaugh fourth and Sam Black fifth.

Peter Kennaugh was second in the under 14 race unable to break down the strong Liverpool Century Team, Mark McNally as expected took the win, Scott Flynn was fifth and Mark Christian came in sixth. The under 16 race saw a convincing win for Andrew Nightingdale, Warren Flynn was fourth, Jon Bellis, who yet again threw up over everyone with one lap remaining had a great ride for fifth and Ashley Whipp was sixth.

All in all it was a great day of racing in excellent weather, with all those taking part performing well, particularly the girls who had to compete with boys of a similar age when usually they compete with younger boys. results can be found here

Peter Gage Sub 21 Minutes !

Super Vet Peter Gage did a stormer of a ride in a 10 mile time trial in the Hull area on Saturday, In what must be the first sub 21 minute ride by a Manx rider, Peter powered around in an incredible 20 minutes 30 seconds to finish second overall and set a new Manx native record!

Cav On National Track Squad

Mark Cavendish travels to Manchester today (Friday) with the British National Track Squad. His first session will be Madison training under the watchful eye of national Coaches Marshall Thomas and Simon Lillystone, Cav then hopes to compete at the North West Regional Championships this Sunday at Birkenhead Park with another Track competition the following week. After the Nat West Island Games Cav then resumes his track training with more incense training on the boards at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester.

The Manx Road Club clothing has finally arrived and very good it looks too! We have skin suits, long sleeve tops and short sleeve racing tops. Several club members and supporters from overseas have pre ordered clothing with the remainder on a first come first served basis, however, if we run out, additional kit can be ordered on a one off basis.

Flynn's go Double Dutch

Sports Aid Recipient Warren Flynn and brother Scott, Manx Road Club, enjoyed three days and five stages of excellent racing while competing in the International Youth Tour Of Emmen, Holland over the weekend.
Riding in temperatures of +86 degrees and in Dutch gearing, which is less than British gearing, both boys gained valuable experience. more

Elliot in Scotland

Fort William’s Cross-Country World Cup race produced a stunning spectacle and some outstanding racing. The course, opened to the public just a couple of weeks ago, was just what the huge crowd wanted to see, with tough technical sections and lung-busting climbs, Elliot finished the gruelling event in 80th place results here.

More Kids Races

After the successfull Youth Championships and requests from children and their parents, the Manx Road Club are likley to run another race with a possibility of a 'series of races' in the not to distant future. As in the Youth Championships the races will be open to all children from all clubs.

Cav Rides Lorraine

Mark Cavendish and his 'South West Team' had a tough five day's racing in the in the Tour de Lorraine. The race is one of the toughest on the junior calendar and to stay with the bunch is an achievement. results can be viewed here

British Cycling Juvenile Series - Eastway

Six local cyclists competed in the penultimate round of the British Cycling National Juvenile Series at Eastway, London on Saturday.
Josh Cowie, competing in his first national round this year finished seventh in the under 10 race, closely followed by Thomas Mazzone in eighth and Jonathan Cregeen in 10th.
In the under 12 event Caroline O'Neill and Tim Kennaugh found it tough going on the undulating Eastway circuit, Caroline finishing in 16th with Tim two places behind in 18th.
Peter Kennaugh was closely marked in the under 14 race after his success two weeks earlier, however one rider did escape and ride alone to victory leaving the bunch to sprint it out for the remaining placings, slightly disappointed at finishing fifth Peter had the consolation of moving into first overall with one round remaining.

Youth Champs

The Manx Road Club staged the Isle of Man Youth Cycling Championships recently. There was a good entry of riders spread over the five age related categories with generous prizes, flowers, medals and championship jerseys for the winners kindly donated by event sponsors Curphey's of Castle St. Douglas.
The under eights started off the proceedings with Leon Mazzone coming home first just ahead of Matthew Davies and Anna Christian.
In the under 10 event spectators were looking to see who would come out on top in what was anticipated to be a close race, and they weren't far wrong when Thomas Mazzone made it a family double by taking the chequered flag from Josh Cowie and Jonathan Cregeen who were second and third respectfully.
Christopher Whorrall had a comfortable win in the under 12 race, Chris led out early to finish a couple of bike lengths clear of second placed Caroline O'Neill and Matheu Marshall in third.
The under 14 category was joined by the under 16 category due to absentees from the latter category for various reasons, however, the pre race favourites were there. Jon Bellis, Elliott Moore (both under 16) and under 14 rider Peter Kennaugh forging an early break in the 25 lapper, with a second group formed behind the leaders, keeping the race exciting as they actually closed on the leading trio towards the end, the leaders, however, were aware of this and increased their pace with Jon Bellis breaking away with a couple of laps remaining to take the under 16 honours from Elliott Moore and Peter Kennaugh, the under 14 winner. The Bronze medal in the under 16 championship went to Cayley Ennett with Matthew Looker taking silver and Mark Christian bronze in the under 14 race. Most unfortunate rider prize goes to Tom Black after a spill during the under 14 event.
The champions looked resplendent on the podium in their 'champion' jersey afterwards, with all those who took part enjoying themselves, the only questions being asked when is the next one?

MMBC Summer Series Round 1

Fifteen riders lined up for the first round of the Manx Mountain Bike Summer Handicap Series on Monday evening,Island Games bound Chris Tierney, who started in the Scratch group caught the riders ahead of him with considerable ease to take a well deserved win, Tony Varley proved his Island Games form is almost there coming home in second place 52 seconds behind the winner. Neil Helks rode a consistent race to finish third holding off fast finishers Graham Hughes, Rob Christian and John Watterson who were fourth to sixth respectively. All those who took part had a great time and are looking forward to the next event on Monday June 23 results here

BSCA Time Trial championships

Warren and Scott Flynn competed in the British Schools National Time Trial Championships held at Bruntingthorpe Air Field Leicester on Sunday. The weather conditions were very poor with strong winds and a torrential rain storm at the start of Warrens event.

Scott won silver with William Penn, Lichfield C.C. taking Gold. Warren was placed fourth with 16 year old Liam Preece taking Gold. There were 13 seconds between 1st and fourth place with only the top four placed riders recording sub 25mins on restricted gears.

Later that afternoon the Welland Valley C.C. held the Airfield Sorties 2003 races for all categories. Both boys competed in the races in their respective catagories.
Warren won by four bike lengths from Matthew Fenton 2nd and Manx Road club rider Steven Guymer, who arrived that afternoon for the race taking 3rd place.
Scott was third with William Penn Lichfield C.C. First.

BC Juvenile Series

Peter Kennaugh notched up an emphatic victory at the third round of the British Cycling Juvenile Series at Hillingdon, London, yesterday. Peter broke away just before half distance in the under 14 event to put nearly a minute between himself and the chasing bunch, series leader Mark McNally took the sprint for second.

Team Gage win Tour of West

Brothers Peter and Allan Gage dominated Sundays Tour of the West road race, the Manx Road Club duo broke away in the early stages to cross the line together at the end of the race. Island Games mountain biker Tristen Gell claiming third spot after breaking away from the bunch, Jacqui Fletcher had a good race claiming the ladies prize

Manx Mountain Bike Club Summer Series

The Manx Mountain bike Club are promoting a summer handicap series commencing on Monday May 19 at South Barrule plantation signing on at 6.30pm for a 7pm start. Cost is £16 for the series or £5 per event
The events will be approximately 45 minute to one hour duration and are open to all abilities age 12 and over. Further dates for the series are as follows, June 23, July 14, and August 11. Further details can be obtained from Tony Varley on 472757

Isle of Man Youth Championships

This year the Manx Road Club promote the Road Race Championship and for the first time in many years we are organising a juvenile championship at the NSC
The championship will take place on Thursday May 22 at 7pm, signing on will be from 6.30pm

The entry fee is £1 and to guarentee acceptance competitors must pre enter by Friday May 16 entries may be accepted on the line if the category is not fully subscribed costing £5

The winner of each category will receive a 'National Champion' jersey with medals for second and third plus numerous other spot prizes

There will be races for boys and girls from all Manx cycling clubs in various categories with appropriate event distances web site

Colin Nelson Mountain Time Trial

The Colin Nelson Memorial M.T.T. is one of the Classic events in the Manx racing calendar. There will be cash prizes for a variety of categories for all ages and for both codes of cycling. So if you have a bike and belong to a Manx Cycling Club, the entry form is in Biks Style.
Mr Brian Nelson, our event sponsor cordially invites you to join him in the Hospitality Suite after the event for the presentations and for refreshments.

The Stugadhoo handicap road race planned for this Sunday (May 4) has been cancelled due to a lack of entries, those wishing to have a spin can meet at the NSC for a club run at the usaul time

Success for Warren and Scott at Salt Ayre

Andrew Nightingale (James Hay RT) took the lead after Stage 1 in the Category A's, closely followed by Steven Rudkin (Liverpool Mercury) and in third spot Mark McNally (Liverpool Century). Stage 2 produced some very close racing, following a sprint to the line incident which saw Matthew Winston (James Hay RT) shooting off the track through the trees narrowly missing a spectator, then performed a miraculous recovery to finish sixth, the end result being Mark McNally (Liverpool Century), Steven Rudkin (Liverpool Mercury), Warren Flynn (Manx RC).

A fight back in Stage 3 saw Warren Flynn take first, Matthew Winston second and Andrew Nightingale third, leaving an overall result after 3 stages - equal first Andrew Nightingale (James Hay RT) / Warren Flynn (Manx RC), with Steven Rudkin (Liverpool Mercury) in third place. Excellent racing all round for competitors and spectators alike, with group A riders performances to equal a pro-tour.

Group B was closely contested with Liverpool Century riders Ian Pugh and Jonathan McEvoy taking first and second place, and Ribble Valley's Daniel Rigby taking third place in Stage 1. Stage 2 was once again led by Liverpool Century riders Ian Pugh and Jonathan McEvoy, whilst Scott Flynn (Manx RC) took third place. The outcome of Stage 3 saw Daniel Rigby take first place, Richard Pye (Red Rose Olympic) second and Ian Pugh relegated to third. The overall result after 3 stages - Ian Pugh (Liverpool Century) first, with Daniel Rigby (Ribble Valley) and Jonathan McEvoy (Liverpool Century) equal second. Marie Staurt (VC Cumbria) produced some good quality racing in this Category being the first of the female competitors. Red Rose Olympic riders Caroline Wood and Jenny Ramsey finished second and third.

Gold for Cav!

Mark Cavendish struck gold in the Kilo and double silver in the sprint and pursuit also Cayley Ennett secured bronze with a great performance in the pursuit at the National Junior Track Championships over the weekend in what was a busy couple of days for local cyclists on and off Island. Several juvenile cyclists tackled the tough East Riding Youth Tour, a British Cycling national series qualifier and Youth Olympic qualifier, others made the day trip to Southport for the Merseyside Division championships with golds going to Chris Whorrall, Billy Harris and Josh Cowie, not to be out done the 'old boys' tackled the prestigious Shay Elliott Memorial in Bray, Ireland, with the whole team figuring well in the results. Locally those who preferred to stay at home competed in the Fletcher Trophy 25 mile time trial on the testing Tossaby circuit. More updates soon
