Commonwealth
Games bound Mark Kelly had an impressive ride in the Jayco Crit, in Australia,
on Sunday. With riders such as Matt Wilson and Baden Cooke
(both Fdjeux.com), Jeremy Hunt (Bookmaker.com), Johnny Clarke from the
new South Australia.com/AIS pro team plus riders such as Richard England
who recently represented Australia at the Manchester World Cup the race
boasted a quality field. A six man break formed early in the race that
Kelly unfortunately missed, however , such was the pace the Sport Aid
recipient still managed to have a good workout. "Got on Simon Gerrans
(Ag2r) for the sprint, missed a couple of gears and lost a few lengths
on him, but got going and was flying in the sprint, came fourth in bunch
gallop not bad at this time of year" said a upbeat Kelly afterwards.
Mark's games build up continues
on Boxing Day with a week long series of track and criterium racing in
Tazmania.

There will be a new look and new organiser for the Isle of Man Youth & Junior Tour. Ollie Last takes over the helm from Peter Kennaugh for 2006. Provisional dates for the three day event are 28, 29 & 30 April 2006. The event will be open to Youth A, B & C categories and for the first time the event will also be open to Juniors. Categories D and E have been dropped due to poor support in 2005. Although the event format has yet to be finalised, it is thought the three day stage race will consist of a prologue time trial and two road races held on closed roads. The event once again will boost a high prize fund and possably some financial assistance for teams of three or more. Further information will appear on the events website as soon as it has been made available or you can contact the Race Director Ollie Last tel.07624 456146.
World Madison Champion Mark Cavendish (Sparkees) and Olympic Development Program (ODP) rider Peter Kennaugh (Glendene CC) came away with victories at Revolution 10 on Saturday evening. Cav and partner Rob Hayles won the Madison, the main event of the evening, after Cavendish slung Hayles in at the closing moments for Hayles to take an exciting final sprint and snatch overall honors from former World Points Champion Chris Newton and current Olympic Pursuit Champion Bradley Wiggins. Cavendish had more success in the 2km Madison Pursuit earlier in the evening, again partnered with Hayles the duo comfortably beat World Madison silver medallists Robert Slippens and Danny Stam. Cav also had a fourth in the Team Elimination event and sixth in the Madison Time Trial.
ODP riders Jonathan Bellis and Russell Hampton (both GlendeneCC) finished 10th in the Elite Team Elimination they also rode well in the Madison gaining points early in the event to finish just outside the top 10.
Meanwhile Peter Kennaugh, riding for the North West Team, strengthened his overall lead in the Future Stars competition with two wins and a third, Kennaugh, somehow avoided early crashes to win the Scratch race but had to settle for third in the Mile Dash, however the Sport Aid recipient was in total control in the Devil Elimination race where he took the final sprint with ease. The ODP rider now leads the 43 rider Future Stars competition with 85 points, Rhys Lloyd (Wales) is now a distant second on 55 points and Jack Hibberd (West Midlands Division) on 43. There was plenty of support from both locals and ex pats within the large crowd to keep the Manxies on their toes.

There was yet more success for local cyclists at Revolution 9 in Manchester on Saturday night. World Madison Champions Mark Cavendish and Rob Hayles limbered up for their forthcoming Six Day program by taking victory in the Madison Kilo event in a fast time of 58.4 seconds. It was also a busy night for Peter Kennaugh who was riding his last off Island event in Manx Road Club colours before joining the crack Glendene Junior Team. The Sport Aid recipient achieved a hatrick of wins in the Mile Dash, Scratch Race and Devil to win maximum points plus the leaders jersey in the Future Stars competition, and that was after intense testing at the English Institute of Sport (EIS) centre three hours earlier! Jonathan Bellis (who was also tested at the EIS earlier in the day) also performed well in the Elite events taking eighth in the Points and Scratch events.

More Talent

The Rock
With riders such as Mark Kelly, Mark Cavendish, Jonathan Bellis, Peter Kennaugh and now Christopher Whorrall, the Manx Road Club must be getting something right. There has been plenty of talk about the riders from the 'rock' as the Isle of Man now seem to be referred to in cycling circles, there has also been mention on Veloriders website about three IOM riders in the top 10 in the scratch race and that is without Jon Bellis riding!
More Manx Success in Team Pursuit - Gold for Cav, Silver for Bellis
There was more Manx success in the National Team Pursuit Championships at Manchester on Thursday. As expected the strong North West team that included Mark Cavendish won gold in a time of 4 minutes 14 seconds. The second team though contained another Manx rider in the shape of Jon Bellis. Bellis and his Glendene Junior team mates looked impressive in final against the North West team which contained current or former world champions. It has been an excellent week for the Manx riders who have come through the ranks of the Manx Road Club, highlights include Cavendish's gold and silver in the team pursuit plus fifth in the Individual Pursuit, Bellis won silver in the Team Pursuit as mentioned and finished 15th in the Points Race having gained a lap early on. Mark Kelly cemented his Commonwealth Games selection with a brilliant ride in the Points Race by finishing sixth and eighth in the Scratch Race. Peter Kennaugh failed to qualify for the Points final but made up for it in the Scratch Race with an impressive ninth, a Commonwealth Games qualifying ride, if he were old enough to compete.
World Madison Champion Mark Cavendish (Team Sparkasse) took Silver behind breakaway winner and former World Junior Scratch Champion Geriant Thomas (Team Wiesenhof) in the National Scratch Race Championships at Manchester Velodrome on Wednesday evening, amazingly there were three Manx riders in the top nine as Mark Kelly (City of Edinburgh) finished eighth and Peter Kennaugh (Manx Road Club) took ninth with both riders achieving the Commonwealth Games standard in the process, 16 year old Kennaugh however, will be too young to compete next year!
With six current World Champions taking part plus several riders seeking Commonwealth Games standards the 24 finalists from the two heats held earlier in the day would be in for some fast racing. After several laps of settling in, there were a series of attacks that would blow the race apart, as one by one World Champion house hold names such as Paul Manning (Recycling .co.uk), Rob Hayles (Recycling .co.uk) and eventually Steve Cummings (Landbrouwkredit) would be dropped by the intense speed. With 20 laps of the 80 lap race remaining there would only be 13 riders left in the race as lapped riders were pulled out. With three laps to go, Thomas made his move low on the inside opening up a sizable gap, into the final lap the Welshman looked to have it sewn up so the attention was drawn to the fast closing bunch and as expected the super fast Cavendish, who earlier finished fifth overall in the pursuit, crossed the line in second with new U23 Academy recruit Ben Swift (JE James RT) taking Bronze. Ed Clancey (Team Sparkasse) was fourth, Chris Newton (Recycling.co.uk) fifth and Tom White (UVCA Troyes) sixth. Another young star Adam Blythe (Pinnerello RT) was seventh, Kelly eighth, Kennaugh ninth, Cummings 10th and Steven Burke (Sportscity Velo) 11th. Such was the speed only 11 riders remained unlapped to finish.
Mark Kelly produced one of his best performances ever by taking sixth in the National Points Championships at Manchester Velodrome on Tuesday evening. Boasting six world champions the racing would prove to be fast and furious, from the onset defending champion Chris Newton (Recycling.co.uk) set the early pace by taking points in sprint one and three of the 160 lap race with sprints every 10 laps, however, Jon Bellis proved he too had the metal when the Manx Road Club rider now riding for Glendene CC took 20 points having gained a lap with Dean Downing (Recycling.co.uk) after the third sprint putting the Manx rider into second overall. Soon another Manx rider in the shape of Mark Kelly (City of Edinburgh) gained points on sprints four, six and seven and then take a second lap to catapult him to second overall. Meanwhile World Madison Champion Mark Cavendish (Team Sparkasse) was being heavily marked as one of the pre race favorites, however Cav was still able to show his sheer speed as he closed down the many dangerous moves that developed during the event. At three-quarter distance World Team Pursuit Champion Steve Cummings (Landbrouwkredit) took a flyer closely followed by Kelly to gain yet another lap, soon the Downing brothers, Isle of Wight's Keiran Page (Aix-en-Provence) and Ed Clancey (Team Sparkasse) also gained a lap pushing Kelly down to seventh one place behind Cummings. By now the gold medal position had gone to Paul Manning (Recycling.co.uk) with team mate Dean Downing safely in silver, Kelly had to score two points to leap-frog Cummings to claim sixth, Kelly did just that proving he can raise his game when it matters. Special mention should go the Jonathan Bellis who dug deep to hang in there after his earlier efforts to finish 15th proving he can mix it with the Worlds best. Such was the pace that no fewer than 15 riders gained a lap, unfortunatly for Cav it was not to be his day finishing one place behind Bellis in 16th.
Recently received some excellent shots of the Bobby and Essie hill climb, thanks to Isle of Man Newspapers. Click here for a preview or here for more cycling photos
There was good turnout of riders and supporters for the Bobby and Essie Collister Hill Climb Champs on Saturday at Kirk Michael. 17 competitors faced the timekeeper in breezy but dry conditions. There were some epic rides, not to mention Stu Bennett who just managed to stay upright spinning his fixed wheel with a cadence of three (revs per minute), then there was Ivan Sharpe who obviously spotted Stuart's predicament so deciding to ride a trike! strange bunch these hill climbers Ed. Best of all though was Aaron Livsey who flew past the big crowd at the half distance point looking like Lance, however, by three-quarter distance steam was spotted coming from Aaron's ears followed by a loud bang resulting in a blown head gasket! I don't think he will start so fast next year.
Afterwards there was a club ride to the Sulby Glen where tea and scones were provided followed by a prize presentation. It was pleasing to see so many riders out on the club run before and after the hill climb, it was a plesent reminder back to the eighties when a large group would frequent the lanes together rather than the current trend with several groups going off in different directions.
Anyway, who won I hear you ask? Young Peter Kennaugh limbered up for Monday's National Track Championships with the winners trophy in four minutes dead with last year's champion Gianni Epiffani finishing second some 12 seconds behind. Third place went to Mark Christian who picked up the junior trophy. Results here pictures later in the week.
In what must be the strongest Manx representation in recent times, five riders will be competing in next weeks National Track Championships at Manchester Velodrome. Competing will be the Manx Road Club quartet of World Madison Champion Mark Cavendish who races in the colours of German team Sparkees and National Omnium Champion Mark Kelly (City of Edinburgh) plus 'youngsters' in the shape of Jonathan Bellis (Glendene CC) and Peter Kennaugh (MRC), the latter two, although Junior category riders, will be there to gain experience with the big boys. Ellan Vannin's Ian Sharpe will be competing in the Disabled events for the Yusamitsu Schlapp team. With so many World and Olympic champions taking part some have said next weeks Nationals will be tougher than next years Commonwealth Games!
The Essie and Bobby Collister hill climb takes place this Saturday morning, October 1 at Kirk Michael, start time is 10 am. A club run will depart the NSC at 9am prompt to ride and compete (for those who wish to) in the hill climb. Afterwards there will be a ride to the Sulby Glen for tea and scones.
Gianni Epifani, pictured left with cigar in mouth, is having a social get-together to celebrate his and Karen's forthcoming marriage. There will be a coach departing the Manx Arms, Onchan, this Saturday at 6.30pm heading to Laxey for a meal at the Mona Lisa restaurant followed later with drinkies in many of Laxey's excellent selection of public houses. Names please, by Wednesday, to either Sconna on 472757, Aaron on 486110 or the man himself (Gianni) on 482942.

Mark Kelly's Good Form Continues
Manx Road Club rider Mark Kelly who competes off Island in City of Edinburgh colours finished an excellent seventh in the Warwick Town Centre Criterium, the final counter of the National Criterium Series. Result here
There was an excellent response to the 'one club' poll. A total of 153 votes were cast with 56% in favour of one club and 41% against with 3% undecided. Although unofficial and for general feedback purposes only, overall it does provide food for thought. What next? All clubs on the Island were asked by the CA for feedback from their members, then there would have to be more discussion then an EGM of the IOMCA with perhaps an official ballot to decide. What ever happens I believe a decision should be made before the year ends to enable clubs (or the new one club) to get organised and rebuild
The poll will close this weekend, if you are one of the few who haven't voted vote now.

There has been interesting voting on the 'one club' poll, initially there was a big push for the yes vote, however, over the past couple of days the 'no's' have fought back with 41% compared to 55% for the yes vote (4% can't decide) Over 100 people have voted so far proving the subject to be important.

The Islands leading Junior riders Jonathan Bellis (MRC), Ashley Whipp (MVW) plus Peter Kennaugh (MRC) who turned Junior for the event competed in the prestigious Junior Tour of Wales. With teams from Norway, Holland, Ireland, Wales and Scotland and teams from the home counties plus World, European and national champions the competition was bound to be tough. In the opening time trial Kennaugh stormed around the testing 10k course in a rapid 13 minutes 08 seconds for an impressive fifth place in his first official junior outing, a good performance considering Kennaugh was struck down along with four others on the ODP camp with a mystery bug only days earlier! team mates Bellis finished 14th and Whipp 26th. Stage two consisted of a 50 mile loop over a tough course with a climb very similar to the Sloc. GB regular Ben Swift (JE James) broke clear to take victory by over a minute to move into the overall lead, behind Kennaugh was caught at the top of the climb by five others including Bellis who went on to take a superb second moving him up to fifth overall, Kennaugh finished sixth moving him up to third overall behind race leader was Ben Swift who recently finished fifth in the World Junior Points Championships with World Junior Pursuit Champion Andy Tennant in second. Whipp came home in 38th helping the Isle of Man team into first place in the team competition an excellent feat in it self considering the Manx team consisted of only three riders!
Stage three took place in windy but sunny conditions, with speeds up to an amasing 100kph on the fast dual carigeway sections! Bellis finished fourth with Kennaugh sixth and Whipp who did some good marshalling for the team in 35th. Kennaugh was now fifth with Bellis seventh overall. Stage four was the shortest but probably toughest consisting of one hour plus one lap of a hilly windswept 3km course. Bellis rode a perfect race picking his moment two thirds through the stage to make his break, the Manx Sport Aid recipient was now clean away with European Scratch Champion Matt Rowe (Wales) they eventually caught the three leaders forming a five man group. Bellis gauged the sprint perfectly to take a well deserved win moving to him to equal second overall with Swift, but behind Edveld Hagen, one of the very strong Norwegian riders. Whipp had another strong performance finishing at the front of what was left of the bunch to finish 24th. Kennaugh however, was the big loser of the day blowing with just 10 minutes remaining to come home in 44th, dropping him from fifth to 15th overall, had he hung on to Whipp he would have held onto a top six overall.
The final stage took in 60 miles of hills around the Brecon Beacons finishing off with a four mile climb over the famous 'Tumble' mountain for a hill top finish. Kennaugh moved into one of the breaks but four riders had already flown including stage and overall winner Alex Dowset (Glendene CC). Bellis finished 17th for an excellent fourth overall, Kennaugh was 25th on the stage for 20th overall and Whipp was 49th for a fine 30th overall
Bellis and Kennaugh were seventh and ninth overall in the mountains competition and Bellis fourth in the points prize. The Isle of Man team ably led by former professional riders Rob Holden and Mike Doyle finished up a brilliant fourth overall
Manx Road Club riders had a successful week at the National Junior and Youth Track Championships in Newport recently. There was a British record for Peter Kennaugh when he qualified fastest in the Youth pursuit only to miss out on gold by less than a second in the final, Kennaugh also picked up a bronze later in the week in the Points race plus clocking a 1 minute 10 seconds in the Junior Kilo for 12th. There was a bronze for Christopher Whorrall in the Under 14 Omnium, Tim Kennaugh also performed well as did Jemes Berry (TSP). Jonathan Bellis was fifth in the Junior Points race. Ashley Whipp (MVW) Cayley Ennett (EV) also competed well during the week. A team of four riders under the banner of Team Isle of Man took part in the Newry Three Day Stage race in Ireland last weekend. Tristen Gell, Gianni Epifani, Aaron Livesey and Mike Doyle put in some good performances. Stage one took place in heavy rain on pan flat 40 mile circuit, the peleton stayed together and a bunch sprint saw Mike Doyle gain a strong top 10 position, the rest of the local riders finished safely in the bunch. Stage two covered 62 miles over a more undulating course, after half way a small group escaped from the main bunch, unfortunately no Manx riders were in the break, despite a concerted effort towards the end of the stage from the main bunch the escapes had gained over one minute at the end of the stage.
On stage three Tristen Gell took full advantage of having his time trial bike by taking fifth position on the stage and moving up to 14th overall. After good time trials Gianni Epifani and Aaron Livesey moved up into the top 30 and 40 on the GC respectively. Stage four was the longest and hardest stage of the event over 70 miles, the main bunch was very active during the early part of the stage, after 10 miles a small break escaped that included Mike Doyle, at one stage they held a two minute lead, however, the escapes were caught with 10 miles remaining. Once again the final stage came down to a bunch sprint and after avoiding a heavy crash in the final kilometer Aaron Livesey produced a fine top 10 position in the sprint, the rest of the local riders arrived safely in the bunch. The team classification was made up of 18 teams, the Isle of Man finished a creditable sixth. Tristen Gell finished top local overall in 14th, Gianni Epifani 28th, Aaron Livesey 38th and Mike Doyle 48th. 100 riders completed the race 122 riders started.

Welsh rider and regular visitor to the Island, Matt Rowe won the European Scratch Race Championships in Italy on Friday evening. Matt's brother Luke is currently staying on the Island and competed in Thursday evenings Bikestyle race. There was less luck for Mark Cavendish whilst qualifying for the Team Pursuit. One of the sponges that are placed along the black line at the bottom of the track, used by officials to stop riders taking a shorter route around the bends, was thrown on to the track by one of the Lithuanian rider's wheels and not put back into its correct place before the British team came around again causing Tom White to flick it up into Cav's wheel jamming him to a halt. Great Britain's Adam Blythe won silver in the Youth Olympic Road Race today. This is great news after a week of bad luck and average results for the British trio. The race was held on pan flat newly surfaced roads resulting in very fast racing, averaging under eight minutes per 6.6km lap.The British lads were always near the front looking comfortable and on top of things. McNally rode hard on the front then into the last two kilometers Peter Kennaugh hit the front and drove it with Blythe on his wheel the Isle of Man rider swinging off on the last corner setting up Blythe for the finish where the Sheffield rider lunged just enough to edge German rider Nils Plotner into bronze. It was another good day for the Italians, or should I say Italian as Elia Viviani has won two Golds and a Bronze this week! Remember the name. Mark McNally is thought to have finished about 10th and Kennaugh rolled over the line in 41st after his earlier efforts. More here Results here
Peter Kennaugh had a bad day at the office in the Youth Olympic Criterium (Points Race) earlier today. Whilst riding the qualifier, Kennaugh's rear wheel went from under him on one of the corners sending him to the ground. With the race run similar to a points race on the track where the first four competitors scored points on the line every lap the Manx Road Club rider had to chase for five laps having been denied a lap out to regain the bunch only to fail to qualify for the final by one point! However GB team mates Adam Blythe and Mark McNally, who also crashed in his qualifier made it to the final. In the Final Blyth finished 22nd and McNally, despite more crashes, was 25th. Italian Elia Vivani was dominant throughout the points race to gain a massive 23 points, 13 more than silver medalist John Degankolb (Germany) with Belgian Robert Federick also on 10 points taking the Bronze
Peter Kennaugh pictured right competing for the first time in Great Britain colours finished a commendable 20th out of 99 riders in the Youth Olympic Time Trial. Kennaugh recorded a time of 9 minutes 49 seconds for the out and back 7.4km course.Team mates Mark McNally and Adam Blythe were 25th and 51st respectfully. McNally in a time of 9 minutes 52 seconds and Blythe clocking 10 minutes 04 seconds. The winner was Russian Evgeny Kovalev in a fast 9 minutes 20 seconds, Indulis Bekmanis (Latvia) won silver at two seconds and bronze went to Italy's Diego Ulissi who was six seconds behind the winner.

An Isle of Man team consisting of Andrew Cook, Graeme Hatcher, Ashley Whipp, Jonathan Bellis and Peter Gage compete in the four day five stage Ras Cymru. Race info and start sheet here
Team Isle of Man riders successively controlled affairs with Jonathon Bellis taking the opening stage in a two up sprint. The stage started brightly and with time bonuses on offer the tempo was always high. Graeme Hatcher slipped into the first break of the day but with time bonuses on offer the bunch were reluctant to let anyone escape resulting in Hatcher being reeled in after two laps. Bellis attacked through the fourth sprint bonus splitting the field and escaping in a four man group. With Mike Doyle, Tristan Gell, Ashley Whipp and Hatcher controlling the bunch and Bellis driving at the front there was little chance of his group coming back. At the bell Bellis took his cue and demonstrated his excellent form by driving hard and spliting the lead group leaving just Bellis and Andy Tennant to fight out the finish which Bellis comfortably won taking the Yellow Jersey by one second from Tennant
On stage two
the riders encountered fast but lumpy roads with a sting in the tail at
the end of each lap in the form of the King of the Mountains climb that
had to be tackled five times. With the Jersey sat proudly on Bellis's shoulders
the Manx team were aware of their responsibilities and the pressure was
immediately removed when Hatcher slipped into a move early on. Comfortably
sat on the back of the four man break Hatcher had a comfortable ride defending
Bellis’s lead leaving Doyle, Gell and Whipp to protect their leader.
Shortly after completing the first lap Hatchers group was caught only for
Hatcher slip away again this time in a three man move that quickly gained
1min 30 seconds, putting Hatcher into yellow on the road. Over the top of
the climb for the second time Hatcher snatched vital time bonuses whilst
behind the pressure went on with Bellis moving into a chasing group which
quickly captured the leaders. With local riders combining to work against
Bellis, he was unfortunate to be pipped to the line by Tennant putting the
two riders equal on time. With both riders winning a stage and placing second
on the other the organisers decided to share the spoils so Bellis and Tennant
were joint winners but the Manxman had the consolation of taking the KoM
jersey. The Manx riders would like to thank the Sports Council for their
continued assistance and also Glen Cooper Car Sales his support.

The success of the Manx Road Club continues with an emphatic victory for Christopher Whorrall in the under 14 National Circuit Championships at Wombwell near Barnsley on Saturday afternoon. In 30 degrees heat Chris and team mate Tim Kennaugh had to endure qualifying races prior to the final due to the high number of competitors on the tight 800 metre circuit. Chris finished a comfortable fourth in his qualifier as did Tim in his qualifier. Into the final Chris, Joe Perret (Lea Valley Youths) and Peter Merridew (Maindy Flyers) broke clear to set up a commanding lead, within seven laps they had the main bunch in sight and would soon lap them, not once but twice! Meanwhile back in the bunch Tim was riding the race of his life, often closing down the attacks and having a few digs himself. Into the last quarter of the race Chris broke clear to cross the line in the best possible way, on his own. Tim came home in 12th place, missing out on the bunch sprint believing there was another lap remaining. In the under 16 race, Peter Kennaugh dropped out midway suffering from fatigue. Adam Blythe (Pinnerello RT) won from defending champion Mark McNally (Liverpool Century)

Peter Kennaugh and 'team mate' Luke Rowe ( who was featured in an article on Newport Velodrome in this weeks Cycling Weekly ) held on to win the Newport Half Six race after gaining a two lap lead earlier on in the event, on the final night the duo finished mid bunch in the final scratch race having earlier secured overall victory in the Derny event. Luke showed his track skills behind the Derny (motorcycle) by taking victory in the multi lap event.
Peter and Luke won a Terry Dolan track frame, sun glasses plus other prizes
Peter Kennaugh and Luke Rowe are still in Yellow after day two of the Newport Half Six.(Reports Matt Rowe)
Racing was tough with no teams allowing Peter and Luke to increase their advantage. Peter was 4th in his Devil/Scratch race and Luke in his heat of the Devil/Scratch won to gain more points for the team. In the Motor Paced Scratch, there was a good piece of teamwork, as Luke hit the front with four laps remaining, with Reter on his wheel, Luke led Peter out for Pete to take an easy well deserved win. In the 2km Dash, peter gained a few more vital points by winning by the smallest of margins. The hardest race of the evening was the Mini Points Race, with the event only being 15 laps with sprints for points every three laps. Luke and Peter were both up there finishing 3rd.
The event concludes this evening (Saturday) with various races including an 80 lap Madison Relay.
After day one of the 'Half Six' event at Newport Velodrome Peter Kennaugh and racing partner Luke Rowe are in Yellow. The plucky duo, who due to their young age, are competing in the 'B' event with youth, third, fourth and women category riders, gained a lap during the evenings racing, they will, however have to be on guard tonight as they try to defend their slender lead. Day one events included a scrach race, Kerin, unknown distance event with the evening concluding with a points race. More details when I get them.
