Future Stars Shine at Revolution
There were yet more
impressive performances from Isle of Man riders at the latest round of the Revolution
series at Manchester Velodrome on Saturday evening.
The Madison theamed event opened with the Elite Team Elimination where Peter
Kennaugh and Adam Blythe finished an impressive fourth behind six day stars
Marco Villa and Iijo Keisse. Jonny Bellis and Matt Brammier finished eighth
Next event
was the Future Stars 5km Scratch Race where Mark Christian proved his good current
form with a fine second, Chris Whorrall finished mid bunch. Later Christian
and Whorrall teamed up for the 50 lap Madison, this they won looking more like
seasoned professionals than young rookies
Bellis finished
sixth in the 10 km Points Race that proceeded the Future Stars One Mile Dash
in which Christian continued his consistency with another second place
The Madison
Kilo would yet again prove to be a close battle, National Madison Champions
Tony Gibb and James Taylor were leading with Kennaugh and Blythe off last, however
despite leading at the half way change the young duo faded to finish up second
with Bellis and Brammier in third
The future
Stars Devil saw Whorrall take a fine second and Christian in fourth
The Isaac Galvez 80 lap Madison was won by Bradley Wiggins and Franco Marvulli,
Kennaugh and Blythe came fourth with Bellis and Brammier ninth.
Graeme Obree took on four of the Future Stars over a 4km Pursuit. Christian
and his three team mates caught the flying Scotsman during the final kilometer
with both the Future Stars team and Obree throughly enjoying the experience
Christian retained
his overall lead with Whorrall dropping a place to fourth in the overall series

Fantasy 10’s League Final Result.
Looking at the
results for the year, the key dates for best times were the 28th June at Killane
and Tynwald Day at Ramsey. Generally, your average punter at the 10’s
found the going tough, the roads around Jurby have been affected by heavy traffic
and a lack of proper maintenance. Wind was also a factor as the Island didn’t
get a sustained spell of calm weather.
The winner
of the Fantasy league was a man with several decades of cycling experience behind
him, his team comprised of a mixture of young and old. ‘Directeur Sportif’
Tony Aspell selected Tom Black, Chris Pedley, Matt Holden and Tony Varley. Looking
at the statistics, Pedley’s 24.49 best time of the season just gave hime
the edge over Dave Taylor’s selection of Scott Flynn, Colin Whiteway,
Tom Black and Trevor Kirkwood.
Congratulations
to Tony Aspel, he receives a prize for his intuitive selection. Hopefully, the
league will run in 2007 with a less complicated format.

More National Success for Kennaugh and Bellis
Isle of Man Bank scholarship riders Peter Kennaugh and Jonathan Bellis ended the British National Track Championships on Saturday evening with yet more medals. Competing with the cream of Great Britains elite riders Kennaugh took bronze in the Points race and then teamed up with Bellis plus their Glendene team mates Alex Dowsett and Luke Rowe to take bronze in the Team Pursuit.
Going back to Wednesday's 4000 metre Individual Pursuit, Bellis clocked an impressive 4 minutes 39.748 seconds to place him ninth behind winner, Saunier Duval professional David Millar, who recently won a stage in the Tour of Spain. Kennaugh finished 11th in a time of 4 min 41.472 sec.
The following day Kennaugh and Bellis were successful in qualifying for the Scratch Race final via their heats. Chris Newton (Recycling.co.uk) was in unstoppable form to win gold from France based Kieran Page (AVC Aix-en-Provence) with Ian Stannard (Recycling.co.uk) taking bronze. Bellis and Kennaugh both rode strong and featured strongly throughout the race to gain a lap over the bunch, Bellis finished fifth with Kennaugh wearing his World Champion rainbows one place behind in sixth.
Although fatigued from their previous days exploits both Kennaugh and Bellis were hoping to perform well in the 40 kilometre Points Race as Bellis took silver at the Junior Worlds event and Kennaugh being British Junior champion they were hopeing to perform well, they would not disappoint either, Kennaugh sat out the first two point scoring sprints to concentrate on gaining laps later on, the tactic seemed to work as he escaped with Ross Sander (Recycling.co.uk) and Evan Aliphatic (Recycling.co.uk) to gain the all important lap that would net them 20 points each, throughout the race Kennaugh continued to rack up the points to secure his bronze medal as Glendene team mate Bellis and GB team colleague Adam Blythe (Pinnerello) tried to promote Kennaugh into the silver position with some excellent lead outs during the last quarter of the event, however despite their efforts bronze it was to be. Sander took gold with 48 points, Oliphant held onto silver with 38 points and Kennaugh's bronze equated to 31 points. Bellis finished up a commendable eighth with 10 points.
Thirteen teams of four riders lined up for the 4000 metre Team Pursuit. The Glendene team would feature three of the riders that won the European Junior and took bronze in the World Junior championships namely Kennaugh, Bellis and Alex Dowsett plus new recruit Luke Rowe. In the heat they clocked the third fastest time to secure a bronze medal ride off against the GB Composite B team. In the ride off the Glendene we slightly down on their opponents but soon clawed their way back into the lead and this was further helped when one of their riders were dropped early on. The GB Composite A team consisting of Ed Clancey, Steve Cummings, Paul Manning and Chris Newton clocked an impressive 4 minutes 03 seconds after catching the Recycling Team of Ross Sander, Ian Stannard, Ben Swift and Gerriant Thomas in the final. Glenden's bronze medal time was 4 minutes 17 seconds

Bronze For Kennaugh and Bellis in National Madison
World
Scratch Race Champion Peter Kennaugh and Points Race silver medallist Jonathan
Bellis teamed up for the British Madison Championships at Newport Velodrome
on Saturday evening. Although feeling the effects of a very tough couple of
months the Isle of Man Bank Scholarship duo rode well, looking resplendent in
their Isle of Man Team kit. As expected pre race favorites Tony Gibb and James
Taylor of the PCA professional Team took an early advantage with Great Britain
Juniors Matt Rowe and Adam Blythe slotting into the silver position and Glendene's
Luke Rowe and another Great Britain Junior Steven Burke holding onto third.
By mid distance the race was nutralised after Junior Time Trial champion Alex
Dowsett crashed resulting in his and partner Russell Hampton's retirement.
Once
the race resumed five teams managed to gain a lap, by now Gibb and Taylor were
cruising, they had won this title five times previously, Rowe and Blythe were
now cementing their silver medal, so all attention now switched to Luke Rowe
and Burke plus Kennaugh and Bellis who were now equall on points, the bronze
would be decided on the final sprint at the end of the 200 lap event.
In the end tactics would decide the outcome, Burke seemed to miss Rowe who was
waiting to be slung in meaning Burke would have to do the remaining laps whereas
Bellis was saving himself up the banking waiting to be slung in with fresh legs
by Kennaugh resulting in Bellis taking the points and the all important bronze
medal
Pictures and report from BC here
Kennaugh and Bellis now have an amazing medal tally, so far this year they have between them World Junior gold, silver and bronze, European gold and National gold and bronze plus National bronze at senior level not bad for a couple of months work
The
following day Kennaugh and Bellis (Glendene CC) plus Warren Flynn (Obree Coaching)
competed in the Solihull Junior race. Priority for the Glendene duo was to defend
team mate Andrew Griffiths' slender lead in the season long Peter Buckley Junior
Series, with Griffiths and nearest rival Mark McNally both finishing outside
the available points this was achieved. Bellis clipped of the bunch towards
the end to finish 17th, Flynn finished mid bunch and Kennaugh came in just off
the back of the bunch.

Amazing Month For Manx Cyclists
Tour
of Britain
Mark
Cavendish signed a two year contract with the crack T-Mobile team and immediately
repaid them by taking the Points competition in the Tour of Britain which finished
on the Mall opposite Buckingham Palace on Sunday, Cav finished the stage in
third place behind Belgian World Champion Tom Boonen and Great Britain's Roger
Hammond, who may also join Cav's T-Mobile outfit for 2007
National
Elite Circuit Series
The 150 plus field rode the same Westminster course the Tour of Britain would
use an hour later. Despite riding an 80 mile UCI Junior race in Belgium the
previous day Kennaugh showed no signs of fatigue when he finished third behind
veteran road man Malcolm Elliott and former world champion Rob Hayles.
Tour
of Wales
Peter Kennaugh's good form continued with an impressive second in the Junior
Tour
of Wales finishing only a handfull of seconds behind Belgium based Tom Diggle.
Jonathan Bellis had a stage win to end up eighth overall
National
Junior and Youth Track Championships
Kennaugh and Bellis both won gold and bronze at Newport, Kennaugh dominated
the Points
Race to take gold and finished up with bronze in the Pursuit after a nail
biting ride off with Alex Dowsett, however there was one of the most exciting
finishes ever in the Pursuit
final after Stephen Burke closed in on Bellis's fast start for the two riders
to finish on exactly the same time to share the championship! Bellis also took
Bronze in the Scratch
Race
Mark Christian won bronze in the Youth
Pursuit and Christopher Whorrall impressed all by nearly pulling of a win
after attacking in the final two laps of the Youth Scratch
Race, he finished fourth. Chris Nicholson gained valuable experience with
a top 20 finish in the Youth B Omniun
Junior
World Championships
Peter Kennaugh surprised all by simply riding the opposition off his wheel in
the Scratch
Race in front of Belgian cycling ledgends Eddy Merckx and Patric Surcu,
only an hour later Jonathan Bellis had a fantastic ride to win Silver in the
Points
Race. Later in the week the Manx pairing made up half of the Great Britain
team to win Bronze in the Team
Pursuit

Local Riders take the Spoils in Merseyside
A contingent of riders from Manx Road Club and Manx Viking Wheelers took part in the Prescot Eagle Open 10 and Southport CC handicap 25 mile Time Trials on the 8th and 9th July respectively.
On a relatively fast course but heavy going in places Gianni Epifani ( MVW ) was second in the 10 TT, in 21mins 54secs, three seconds behind the winner Andy Walsh ( Birkenhead North End CC ). All the other local riders were well placed recording some very respectable times. Peter Gage 22mins 08secs, joint 1st veteran, Dave Taylor 22mins 09secs, Trevor Kirkwood 23mins 10secs and Peter Doyle 23mins36secs.
Peter Gage
secured a fine victory in the 25 TT using his wealth of experience to
master the wind and rain and in places a very dangerous circuit. Peter
recorded an excellent 57mins 56secs, Gianni Epifani was 2nd in 58mins
16 secs. Trevor Kirkwood was joint first on Handicap in 55mins 02 secs,
recording 1hour 01mins 02 secs on actual time. Peter Doyle had a strong
ride in 1 hour 03 mins. Unfortunately Dave Taylor suffered a puncture.
Bikestyle
Rescheduled
The Bikestyle events washed out by rain have been rescheduled for Thursday, August 10 (staged by EVCC) and Thursday, August 24 (staged by MVW).
Next Bikestyle
The next Bikestyle event takes place on Thursday week, July 20, marshals are, Ged Power, Aaron Livesy, Colin Whiteway and Stuart Brown.
Complaints
Several complaints have been made regarding dangerous riding and following cars in time trials. Please read the following points?
Complaints
against specific riders have been made and the CA will follow these up.
Most common is the practice of crossing the carriage way on the entry
and exit of corners. This appears to becoming common place. This is a
very dangerous practice and puts the marshals in a very ‘delicate’
position as they have to deal with complaining motorists (who are in the
right).

| Jim's End to End Since leaving Land’s End last Tuesday morning Jim has covered 383 miles in 23 hours to get as far as Frodsham, Cheshire, for a short break with his eldest daughter Jessica. So far it’s been a fairly routine trip with the worst thing that’s happened is that Ann had a puncture in one of the van tyres two hours into the journey. The weather has been typical of the sort you get just when you fancy going out for a ride. When Jim started out from Land’s End it was nice and cool, but within a couple of hours it was 32 degrees. Day two started out the same but instead of the sunshine it rained for the last three hours of his ride. Day three saw him starting out in the rain and for five hours Jim just got soaked, then on arrival in Shrewsbury it was baking hot again. Today’s weather has been nice for the bike, warm and overcast. More soon

Cav Wins Teare Trophy
There was
an impressive turnout of 45 riders for the Teare Trophy road race on Sunday.
Considering the Manx Road Club promoted event was only hastily organised
a few days earlier due to the cancellation of the Colin Nelson Mountain
time trial it was amazing to witness what was one of the largest road
race fields recently seen on local roads.
Starting from the Wildlife Park car park the race was split onto two groups
with A riders covering 7 3/4 laps and the B race doing 5 3/4 laps on the
same course.
The opening laps saw little action untill the
B race was caught by the faster A race with five laps remaining, within
another lap riders from the B group were begining to get dropped and forming
their own little groups. With only two laps remaining it was looking more
likely that both races would remain together resulting in two bunch finishes,
a nightmare for the judges and that was how it turned
out. The B race sprint was taken by Chris Whorrall form Matt Looker and
John Marchment in third.
One lap later the A race went as predicted to Mark Cavendish, having just
recovered from septicemia and back on home soil preparing for the forthcoming
Tour of Poland. Second place went to last years winner Aaron Livsey with
first veteran Peter Gage third.
Due to the large size of the bunch sprint in both events some riders may have been missed from the results, if anyone finds that they are missing from the results or placed in the wrong position please contact Jim Cottier on 823974 with any helpful information stating where you beleive you finished and thr rider directly in front and or behind you

Kennaugh Fifth in National Criterium Championships
Peter Kennaugh had a brilliant ride to finish fifth in the National Criterium Championships at the Horwich on Sunday. Kennaugh, an Isle of Man Bank Scholarship recipient, had special dispensation to compete with the Elite riders, as did his ODP colleague and friend Adam Blythe, who had an impressive ride to claim the bronze medal. Attacks were the order of the day with several riders breaking away in the early part of the race, it was at about half distance when the decisive split involving 20 riders developed, most of the pre race favorites were there and lap by lap they would pull away from the bunch. Into the final five laps it was looking more likley that it would be a bunch as no one was allowed to escape and claim a lone win. With two laps remaining Rob Hayles punctured but received a slick bike change enabling him to regain the break within a lap. Into the final lap it was Hayles again on the front with PCA riders Malcolm Elliott, James Taylor and Tony Gibb in close attendance, through the last corner Taylor and Gibb opened up the sprint with Taylor winning the national jersey from Gibb with Blythe holding on to take a fantastic third, Karl Freeman (Team Milton Keynes) held off a late charge from Kennaugh to finish fourth. Kennaugh was obviously delighted with his ride, he was aiming for a top 10 position. Manx riders have recently performed well at the National Criterium Championships, last year Mark Cavendish won with Mark Kelly in sixth and Kelly took silver in 2002

Isle of Man Road Race Championships This Sunday
The Isle of
Man road race championships take place this Sunday on the tough Bride
'Tour of the North' circuit. The winner of the 60 mile event may not be
quite as easy to predict as missing contenders include Andrew Roche who
is still recovering from a broken collar bone he sustained only metres
from winning the Rutland to Melton Classic, Peter Kennaugh who will be
making the short trip to compete in the National Criterium Championships
at Horwich and Jonathan Bellis who is on a rest week after his recent
run of European stage races, however, Jonny may still ride. Elliott Baxter
who is quickly returning to form will also be a non starter. Those likely
to impress include current man on form Ashley Whipp plus Andrew Cook,
Aaron Livsey, Peter Gage, Mike Doyle and Graeme Hatcher also Tony Aspell
has apparently been spotted doing intervals on Bride Hill, so we can't
rule him out either.

Isle of Man
Bank Scholarship rider Peter Kennaugh (MRC) won Sunday's John Hamer Road
Race over a tough 50 mile route that took in the steep climbs of Dalby
and three laps of the leg sapping undulations of the Stuggadhoo circuit
to finish off. 30 riders lined up in two ability groups starting out at
Marown School.
The bunch remained intact through Ballacraine and St Johns but once on
the Patrick road Ashley Whipp (MRC) made an early bid for glory when he
broke clear before reaching the Dalby climb. Once on the slopes of Dalby
a select group containing Aaron Livsey (EV) Andrew Cook, Graeme Hatcher
and Gianni Epifani (all MVW) Mark Christian (TSP) plus Kennaugh formed
behind Whipp, 20 seconds further back a group containing Mike Doyle (MRC)
Paul Kneen (MMBC) and Elliott Baxter (MVW) were trying to make inroads
to the leaders.
By the top of Dalby Whipp had been joined by Kennaugh, the duo worked
together on the decent to Ballasalla, but they didn't commit and their
lead hovered at approximate mately 20 seconds before Kennaugh was reeled
in just before Black Hill and Whipp at Ballagarey Farm on the approach
to St Marks
Once on the
Stuggadhoo finishing circuit that had to be covered three times, the first
rider to become detached was Christian on the steep climb after the start
finish area, however the plucky teenager battled on gamely and rejoined
after a long chase. With two laps remaining the attacks continued, nothing
serious just little digs, again Christian would be dropped then rejoin
the lead break.
Approaching the bell Hatcher attacked, only Kennaugh and Whipp seemed
able to respond resulting in the 16 year old Olympic Development rider
and Hatcher to move clear of the four chasers, Christian's elastic finally
snapped causing him to be dropped and eventually be caught by Doyle and
Baxter at the line.
The victory
odds were now in Kennaugh's court as Hatchers team mates had been dropped,
the pair tapped through taking turns on the front building up a lead of
20 seconds with four miles remaining, however the chasers never gave up
and on the final climb with half a mile remaining Whipp attacked and actually
made contact to the leaders just as Kennaugh made his bid for victory.
At the line Kennaugh took the win well clear of Hatcher who in turn had
a gap over Whipp in third with Cook, Eppifani and Livsey finishing fourth,
fifth and sixth respectfully
The shorter
B race remained intact until Dalby, on the climb six riders moved clear,
Tim Kennaugh and Chris Whorrall (MRC), Sam Looker, Matt Looker, Colum
O'Shea and Tom Black (all TSP) moved clear with Kennaugh losing contact
near the top to eventually rejoin towards Ballasalla, however the leading
six went of course at Ballasalla putting Christopher Nicholson (TSP) and
Tony Aspell (EV) who had been dropped earlier into leaders on the road.
The 'sat nav six' later caught Nicholson and Aspell on the last lap of
Stuggadhoo. On the run in to the line, O'Shea wound up the sprint but
it was Whorrall who nipped past to take the win.
More later
Top six. 1st Peter Kennaugh, 2nd Greame Hatcher, 3rd Ashley Whipp, 4th Andrew Cook, 5th Gianni Epifani and 6th Aaron Livsey

Manx One Two at National Series
Isle of Man Bank Scholarship duo Peter Kennaugh and Jonathan Bellis totally dominated the latest National Junior Series event at a hot and sunny Brentwood on Sunday. The one hour plus five lap criterium went from the gun with Kennaugh putting in a couple of hard laps on the front from the word go. Within 10 minutes a break developed containing Kennaugh and Simon Holt of the Merlin Development team and soon they had a lead of 20 seconds. With a Glendene and Merlin rider up the road it was down to the Le Coq/Dolan riders, as Series leaders, to do the chasing.
By mid distance Bellis broke clear to join the leading duo. The Glendene pair now worked hard on the front with Holt as they lapped riders one by one. Eventually they lapped the field, only one other rider would remain unlapped, that was the new Junior National Champion Russell Hampton, also a Glendene rider who eventually finished fourth. By now the commentator was getting very excited with every other sentence referring to the Isle of Man!
With 10 minutes remaining it was time to lose Holt, It was Kennaugh who attacked opening up a 10 second gap, Bellis simply sat on Holt who had to do the chasing, the effort soon took it's toll enabling Bellis to easily drop the tiring Holt to Join his Glendene team mate who was waiting up the road. The pair rode hard together for the remaining laps. The commontator was now predicting a Manx win! Over the line it was Kennaugh from Bellis with a great ride from Holt, who had been away all race with Kennaugh taking third some 20 seconds behind the Manx duo. There was great delight within the Glendene team as they promoted the day's racing
It must be the first time that Isle of Man riders took the top two placing's in a National Series event and bodes well for their future cycling careers. Bellis now continues his World and European Track Championship build up with a ride in the tough Junior Tour of Switzerland, he should be in with a shout after his impressive ride in the recent Tour of Axel. Kennaugh meanwhile is having a week off the bike before commencing his World and European Championship build up

Academy Bears Fruit
'Cyclists
who are attending the Coaching Academy are showing some great promise',
that's the verdict of MRC Coach Peter Kennaugh snr. 'On Thursday at session
three, riders were introduced to sharing the pace while bunch riding.
It is amazing how quickly the youngsters pick up what is asked of them,
initially they looked a little ragged at the edges but within no time
they were going through and off in a straight line'.
'Next they were assessed with a one lap time trial, through the summer
they will be taught how to improve skills such as cornering, pedaling,
starting efforts, group riding at speed and body positioning on the bike
to name just a few, then will be re timed so they can see their improvement
for themselves'.
To end the session riders competed in a Team Pursuit with nine riders

tough day for the Manx riders in the Van Zuid Limburg stage race in Belgium.
Peter Kennaugh having just bridged across to a break had the miss-fortune

in the main bunch to move up to 88th overall, Jonathan was unfortunate
to miss his start time in the time trial stage thus his low position on

Aid duo Jonathan Bellis and Peter Kennaugh have both had their share of
problems competing in the Van Zuid Limburg stage race in Belgium. In the
opening 7km time trial Peter Kennaugh finished a creditable 8th out of
142 starters behind winner and Glendene team mate Alex Dowset. Jonathan
Bellis, however finished at the bottom of the pile having missed his start
time!
On the 100k afternoon stage the Glendene riders were caught up in the
multitude of crashes that occurred during the stage, Kennaugh ended up
going over the bars injuring his hands and shoulder in the process, at
least he was able to regain the bunch after a 15km chase unlike team mate
Matt Rowe who crashed in a separate incident, his Specialized team bike
beyond repair!. All the Glendenes, bar Rowe, finished with the bunch nine
seconds behind two escapees who clipped off to win the stage.
Dowsett now leads overall with Kennaugh in ninth and second in the Young
Rider competition. Bellis is holding high placings in both the Points
and Mountains categories, so will now concentrate in these competitions
from now on.

Fantasy 10 League
Here's your
chance to take part in the Fantasy 10 competition. It is free and there
is a prize for the winner
Entries will close for the 2006 Fantasy Cycling League on Tuesday 2nd
May 2006. All you have to do is email the club with your name and the
names of four riders who you believe will improve over the '10' series.
The score is calculated in seconds, the difference between the 2nd worst
performance and best performance over the year.
There is a catch, three of your riders will have to post a best time of
less than 24.59 prior to the end of the season!
For example, your choices may be, 2nd worst time Best Time
A. Rider (second worst time) 23.10 (best time) 22.50 would then be a 20
second difference
E.Aaron Presley (second worst time) 23.39 (best time) 23.29 = 10 second
difference
Mark Lawrenson (second worst time) 25.58 (best time) 24.58 = 60 second
difference
Ivan Campo (second worst time) 25.48 (best time) 25.00 = 48 second difference
You (second worst time) 27.22 (best time) 26.10 = 72 second difference
The
score for the season would be -210 seconds. Updates will be posted on
mrc.com.

Bonus Ball
Mike Kelly 3 won Saturday's Bonus Ball
Manx Sport
Aid recipient Peter Kennaugh won a stage and finished 11th overall in
the Martyn Ashfield 2 Day, the Junior Road Series opener.
On day one the riders were greeted to blustery winds and heavy showers
for the tough 60 mile stage that included two tough climbs. The opening
10 miles was rather sedate with only one rider escaping the bunch, once
on the climb however the action started with various riders clipping off
the front including local rider Warren Flynn (Obri Coaching)
By mid distance a strong break had formed containing Kennaugh, plus Glendene
CC team mates Alex Dowsett and Andrew Griffiths plus Mark McNally (Le
Coq Sportive) and Tom Diggle (Kuota/Biemme). Approaching the final climb,
20 miles before the finish the break was almost caught by the bunch but
the leading five reopened the gap over the climb and actually increased
their lead on the run in to the line.
With three miles remaining Kennaugh attacked and Dowsett went after him
opening up a 15 second gap going into the final kilometer, the duo were
now safe and decided to cross the line together, the photo finish had
the final say, however, giving the verdict to Kennaugh. Flynn took fifth
in the bunch sprint for a good 10th overall.
Stage two saw the riders cover seven laps of a 10 miles circuit that included another taxing climb. Two Glendene riders went up the road with a plan to take the pressure of Kennaugh, and if the break succeeded, take the stage win plus the overall. This was how it panned out, with most eyes on the yellow jersey the break simply romped away with European Junior Scrach Champion Matt Rowe (Glendene CC) taking the win and team mate Andrew Griffiths taking the overall win. Flynn finished in 22nd (19th overall) and Kennaugh rolled in with the bunch in 34th for 11th overall

Congratulatory Messages Flood In
There is a
great buzz on the Isle of Man after the Gold medal success of Mark Cavendish
and team mates Jonathan Bellis and Mark Kelly. The news even made the
BBC main sport news headlines and was repeated on the Commonwealth Games
programme throughout the day. Manx Radio has also been running the story
all day with comments from the Chief Minister, Donald Gelling plus local
residents in and around Douglas.
Rival countries and Islands such as Guernsey and Wales have also sent
in their congratulations
It will be back to work for the cycling team however as Andrew Roche,
Andrew Cook and Greame Hatcher tackle tomorrow's Time Trial (start
sheet), in fact Rochie will be kept busy as he competes in the Thursday's
Mountain Bike event and Sunday's Road Race. The sucessfull track duo of
Mark Cavendish and Mark Kelly also take part in Sunday's Road Race with

Gold For Cavendish
It's taken
40 years since Peter Buckley won Gold in Jamaica but the Isle of Man has
another cycling Gold medal after Mark Cavendish won the Commonwealth Games
Scratch Race
The 80 lap race started quite tame compared to the points race two days
earlier but the finish would make up for that. After five riders succeeded
in taking a lap from the bunch in the opening laps. Cav had Australian
Ashley Hutchinson, Canada's Zach Bell, Scotland's James McCallum and Timothy
Gudsell from New Zealand for company. Once the lap was taken and five
strong countries represented it would prove difficult for others to re-gain
laps resulting in a steadier mid section to the race.
There were flurries from the likes of New Zealand riders Greg Henderson
and Hayden Godfrey plus Australia's Sean Finning and Ben Kersten with
five laps remaining trying to set up their teamates for the final dash
for the line, but it would be Cav who would have the final say from an
ultimate lead out in the shape of Rob Hayles who wound it up for the final
two laps setting Cavendish up for a comfortable win as nobody could get
near him in the final sprint for the line, a great win for the Isle of
Man and to James Berry who Cav dedicated the win
The
best team in the Scratch race were the Isle of Man. Jonathan Bellis
was an excellent sixth and an equally impressive eighth for Mark
Kelly after finishing fifth in the Points Race ....and
we don't have our own track!
A fantastic performance by the Manx team and support staff

Brilliant Performance by Mark Kelly
Mark
Kelly pictured left was the highest placed Isle of Man
rider in the Games Points race finishing a brilliant fifth. Kelly played
his cards early on and was holding on to second place for most of the
event. The leading five riders were in a league of their own as Australian
gold medal winner Sean Finning clocking up a massive 137 points. Silver
medallist Hayden Roulsten (New Zealand) scored 119 points and Welsh rider
Geriant Thomas won bronze with 110 points. Scotland's Evan Oliphant climbed
into fourth place at the expence of Kelly on the very last sprint to score
109 points with the Manxman finishing up fifth on 106 points. Australia's
Peter Dawson was sixth on 70 points.
Kelly's
Isle of Man team mates Mark Cavendish finished 11th on 38 points and Jonathan
Bellis gained 26 points for 13th place

The Games points race takes place tomorrow (Friday) for the first time in many years there will be an Isle of Man 'squad' on the boards. Mark Cavendish, Mark Kelly and Jon Bellis will have to ride heats to qualify for the final. The Manx trio should, baring accidents, qualify comfortably for the final which will be viewed on the TV in the morning
The popular Manx Telecom 10 entries have now closed as the maximum 140 entries have been received
Manx Sport Aid recipient Peter Kennaugh surprised all by taking the yellow jersey after the opening stage of the Bikeline sponsored Mersey Roads Two Day in North Wales. The main event on the UK cycling calendar over the weekend saw Kennaugh time trail to victory in the 1.6 km prologue stage in an impressive time of 2 minutes 38 seconds to beat England Commonwealth Games bound Simon Richardson by just over half a second.(Kennaugh slightly bettered Richardson's winning time in the 2005 event) Ben Greenwood of the Recycling Team was third just over a second down on Kennaugh. Another England Commonwealth Games rider, Recycling's Robin Sharmen was fourth at 3.7 seconds and Matt Bottrill (De Rosa RT) fifth 5.9 seconds behing the Glendene CC rider.
Later in the day stage two consisted of a 40 mile road race, however Kennaugh missed the main break of 10 riders to finish 14th overall, fourth in the bunch sprint 25 seconds down on winner Richardson of the Subaru-Gary Fisher Team. Sunday's 80 mile stage had to be cancelled due to heavy snow which meant Kennaugh finished 11th overall and first Junior, a considerable performance as all those ahead of him were Elite category riders.
Manx Road Club's Ashley Whipp finished 35th in the time trial 18 seconds down on Kennaugh, Whipp's recent improvment was evident when he was helping the Glendene riders and others reduce the 10 escapees lead from 45 seconds down to 25 at the finish of stage two, where he finished 31st, a real contender for the next Commonwealth Games in four years time!

Man cycling team set off along with other Manx competitors for the long
trip to Melbourne, Australia on Friday. Cyclists Andrew Roche, Jonathan
Bellis, Andrew Cook and Graeme Hatcher will join World Madison Champion
Mark Cavendish and Mark Kelly who are already out in Aus.
The trackies have the best chance of picking up medals, we all know about
Cav's credentials, a current World and European champion, Mark Kelly can
also mix it with the best as can Jonathan Bellis and both are capable
of finishing in the top six or even sneaking a medal on the right day.
Rochie could also pull something out of the bag in the road events and
he will be an unknown quantity in the Mountain Bike event.
Club members will soon be running a fantasy 10 League, if you can't win the real thing then this may be the answer! Also a questionnaire will be doing the rounds, just fill it in and return so we all can see what makes you tick!.....Watch this space

Another Games rider, Graeme Hatcher broke away from the remainder of the bunch to finish third, albeit halp a lap down on leading duo.

Sport
Aid recipient Peter Kennaugh won two events and the overall Future Stars
series at Revolution 12 in Manchester on Saturday evening. Such was his
dominance in previous rounds that Kennaugh only required one point to
win overall but took 15 points by winning the opening Scratch Race leading
out with one 250 metre lap remaining. In the One Mile Dash event the Olympic
Development (ODP) rider finished in the middle of the pack but made up
for it later on in the evening by taking the Devil for another 15 points.
It was a fantastic result and bodes well for the future, the 2005 winner
Steve Burke went on to win silver at last years World Junior Team Pursuit
and second overall in the Future Stars last year was Andy Tennant who
is now a World Junior Pursuit Champion. Afterwards, Kennaugh was presented
with the overall series prize, a Raleigh Team road bike plus the Revolution
winners jersey.
Jonathan Bellis also performed well in the Elite Madison events, ideal
preparation for the Commonwealth Games now only a matter of weeks away.
The ODP rider and Sport Aid recipient, partnered with Steve Burke, finished
fifth in the opening Madison Devil, then finished 10th in the Points race
and sixth in the final Madison proving he is hitting form at the right

Isle of Man Commonwealth Games rider Mark Kelly is currently in Australia preparing for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games. His build up so far has consisted of track and criterium racing in Tasmania as well as Australia then next Saturday the Manx Road Club rider joins up with his IOM team mates (minus Jonny Bellis and Cav) for the Tour of Siam.
After several weeks of endurance rides of up to six hours with the Victoria Institute of Sport riders Mark is now introducing speed work into his training in the shape of the tough Jayco Bay Cycling Classic, a week long series of one hour criteriums with riders such as Tour de France stars Robbie McEwen and Baden Cook taking part, Mark actually got the better of these riders with an excellent ninth in one of the races, not bad considering Mark does anything up to three hours on the bike before competing in these crits!
After the seven day Tour of Siam the IOM team return to continue their Games build on home soil, however, Mark will remain down under and continue with a diet of criteriums, track racing and road races with the hope of reaching Melbourne in the best possible form.
