Cheeky Cav!

Team High Road gave a lesson in sprinting in the coolest possible way on stage 17 of the Giro d'Italia today. With another long leadout by High Road's Bradley Wiggins who swung off to in the final kilometre handing over to André Greipel who would set up Cavedish for his third stage win, all the sprinters from rival teams waited for Cav to pounce only for the Manx man to repay Greipel for past lead outs in the best possible way by letting his German team mate take the win. Manx Team Perform Well in Sussex

Team Isle of Man - Microgaming riders performed well in the tough 75 mile Tour of Sussex on Sunday. Despite the forecast of heavy rain it turned out to be hot sunshine with a gentle breeze blowing in from the English Channel. The course, within metres of Beachy Head, consisted of 10 laps of a seven mile course that included a tough two kilometre climb.

Mark Christian was in the early break of eight riders that at one point built up a lead of over three minutes, but a second bunch of six, including series leaders Erick Rowsell (Corridori) Luke Rowe (Rapha Condor) and Tim Kennaugh (Isle of Man) formed a chase group. The race remained like this for a few laps until the two groups came together with two laps remaining. On the final lap Alaxander King (GWR) moved off the front by a handfull of seconds to begin with, but by the bottom of the hill with 2km remaining his lead had built to 24 seconds. Only Rowsell caught King before going on to take the win with King second and Rowe third. Christian came home in ninth, 45 seconds behind the winner, with Kennaugh in 10th at two minutes 54 seconds, having had to get off his bike with cramp within sight of the finish. One of the rides of the day came from Tom Black, who not renowned as a climber, came home in 12th. Colom O'Shea also gained national series points with a fine 20th place. Chris Whorrall had to pull out during the race due to illness. Photo: Manx riders Colom O'Shea leading Tom black. See more photos here Report, results and photo from British Cycling

Whorrall Wins Roy Killey

Manx Road Club rider Chris Whorrall won the Roy Killey Memorial road race held in warm sunny conditions on Sunday. It was the on form Whorrall plus Tim Kennaugh, Greame Hatcher, Elliott Moore, Colum O'Shea and HSBC series leader Warren Flynn who broke clear on the final lap of the six lap 60 mile race. Early moves by Tom Black, Dave Taylor, Gavin Quayle, Mark Christian, plus earlier attempts from Whorrall, Kennaugh, Hatcher and Flynn came to nothing due to the flat nature of the course and an eager bunch, however, as tired legs set in the gaps began to appear leading to the leading six riders to break clear and just hold off the chasing pack. Hatcher finished second with Kennaugh third. Flynn was fourth, O'Shea fifth and a delighted Elliott Moore was sixth. Thomas Mazzone (TSP) won the B race from Russell Collister with Dave Bell in third. L to R: Tim Kennaugh, Chris Whorrall and Graeme Hatcher Results

Cav Wins the Scheldeprijs...Again!

Video of the last kilometre, Cav's post race interview and that podium presentationcourtsey of Sporza.be here

Mark Cavendish won the 96th edition of the Scheldeprijs Vlaanderen after he pipped Sunday's Paris Roubaix winner Tom Boonen (Quick Step) at the line to win the event for the second year in succession. Last years win was brilliant, the way Cav came the long way round to beat Robbie McEwen but this year Cav eclipsed that as he started out  joint favorite with the on-form Boonen so all the big sprinters would be watching Cav reducing his chances in the sprint. Cav, however did not disappoint as he beat Boonan into second with McEwen (Silence Lotto) taking third. More from Cycling News

Word in the Peleton

Sources from within the peleton noted that Peter Gage was not quite over his cough...apparently he received a push up one of the hills on the Peel coast road (thanks for that snippet of information Bubbles!)...less than an hour later the phone rang again from another of my informants who claimed that Bubbles himself also received a helping hand up another of the climbs on the Tour of the West course from non other than eventual winner Mark Cavendish!

Cav Wins Road Champs

Team Highroad's Mark Cavendish won Sunday's Isle of Man road race championship. The Manx Road Club member sprinted clear from breakaway companion Andrew Roche (Pinarello RT) after the duo broke clear in the early stages of the 75 mile event held on the tough Tour of the West course in cold but sunny conditions.

It was Greame Hatcher (MVW) who took the initiative by breaking clear shortly after the start to build up a lead of over three minutes at one point. Warren Flynn (Obree Racing) was also in the action early on spending just over a lap in the company of Cavendish and Roche before he dropped back to the main bunch.

Meanwhile, in the 'B' race Adam Johnson (TSP) got the better of Jonathan Cregeen (MRC) in the two up sprint for the line with Greg Chambers (MRC) coming home in third spot. Eve O'Hare (MVW) won the women's championship

Behind Cav and Rochie all eyes were on who would get third place, two miles out it looked to be between Manx Road Club youngsters Chris Nicholson and Tim Kennaugh, but they were caught napping in the final mile with some gutsy riding by Aaron Livsey (EVCC) who bagged the bronze medal. Nicholson who did the ride of the race to come home in fourth place. Results, if I receive them!.

The race video is backed by a song called 'Free Road' and features EVCC cyclist Mark Lawrence on Lead, Rhythm and Bass Guitar, plus Drum Machine Programming, Stu Dunn, formerly of "Stinging with Bigness" on Keyboard and vocals, and Steve Parry who was also in "Stinging with Bigness" on Rythym Guitar. Mark came up with the chords and title, and Stu wrote the words. Manx Telecom 10 League

The popular Manx Telecom 10 League got underway on the Jurby course on Wednesday evening and there were some nice bits of kit on show too. One such bike was ridden by Gavin Quayle, it had some real trick bits on it including some £700 ceramic bearings in those £1300 wheels (according to the gossip in the Creg ny Baa afterwards!) Anyway I was sitting up on this damp hedge taking a few shots and chatting to some of the spectators when all of a sudden there was this almighty whoosh...'what the hell was that?' I asked...'Gavin Quayle' came the reply. I couldn't wait to get back to tell the lads and see what time he did thinking he could perhaps sneak a 21!..Alas, Doolze reckoned those ceramic things aren't what they are cracked up to be and the Laxey sprinter would prove to be right as Gav clocked a rather tame 24.02!...even Marty Warren went faster! Winner on the night was Mark Christian from Tim Kennaugh and Gianni Epifani in third. Results and there some pictures before, during and after the event on the Photo Gallery

EVCC Handicap...What a close Finish!

There was a very close finish to Sunday's Handicap Road Race held in very cold but dry conditions over four laps (36 miles) of the testing Bride course. The scratch group with riders such as Mark Cavendish, Chris Whorrall, Tim Kennaugh, Mark Christian and Graeme Hatcher failed to make contact to the well organised group that started three minutes ahead. There was long lead out by the 'Posse' train, who incidentally were missing their top sprinter, Peter Gage, due to a cold, resulting in a difficult prediction of who would take the win. In the end it came down to one of the closest sprints ever seen on Manx roads resulting in a split decision amongst the judges at the finish and after long deliberation giving the verdict to Juan Kinley (MRC) from team mate Neil Bellhouse in second with another Manx Road Club rider James Smettem in third. Eve O'Hare's (MVW) improvement continued with another plucky ride to finish top woman with an equally impressive ride from first Youth rider Jonathan Cregeen (MRC)

Post race quote: Immediately after the hectic bunch sprint that would have suited Cav down to the ground, race reporter 'Bubbles' asked Neil Bellhouse 'What gear were you on there (the sprint finish).........Top monty' replied a delighted Bellhouse! Results

The Team High Road duo looked to be marked out of contention by many of the teams taking part as one after another of the leading teams gained laps it looked as if the Brits were going to miss out despite their brave efforts to break clear. Cav and Wiggins, however, had one shot left, they broke clear with a mere 25 laps remaining and forged ahead picking up valuable sprint points on the way before they finally gained that all important lap and put the GB duo in the lead. The German team put a spanner in the works in the final 20 laps and could have mathematically won if they took the final sprint and the British duo failed to score but Cav and Wiggins had everything under control and gave Team GB another world title in what was an amazing week for British Cycling. Mark Christian Third in Junior Series Opener

Manx Road Club rider Mark Christian, pictured left, rode strongly over the two day, three stage Martyn Ashfield road race in Abergavenny, Wales on Saturday and Sunday. Stage one was a mostly uphill two mile time trial followed by a 60 mile road stage in the afternoon the National Junior Road Series event concluded with a 70 mile road stage on Sunday morning. Taking part in Team Isle of Man colours were Christian, Tim Kennaugh, Chris Whorrall, Scott Flynn, Colom O'Shea and Tom Black.

Stage one was won by National time trial  champion Erick Rowsell (Team Corridori) from Christian in second with Andrew Fenn (Dolan) third. Kennaugh came home in ninth, Whorrall 24th, Flynn 42nd, O'Shea 51st and Black 61st.

Stage two was held in what can only be described as atrocious conditions with strong winds, heavy rain and hail throughout the duration of the race. Tom Walker (Torq-Colnago) and Peter Dibben (Team GWR) broke clear on the final lap to build up a maximum lead of 1 minute 53 seconds but a hard chase by the lead group of 19 riders brought this gap down to just a handful of seconds at the line with Walker taking victory. The Manx riders finished in the lead group and were given the same time. O'Shea and Black suffered early on and were forced to retire.

The final stage would prove to be a tough affair with the field splitting into many small groups. Luke Rowe (Rapha Condor) won the stage after he broke clear from Rowsell and Christian on the final climb, Kennaugh was next home in 16th and Whorrall in 19th and Flynn one place behind in 20th. Overall Rowsell won with Rowe in second and Christian third. Kennaugh was 12th, Whorrall 17th and Flynn 21st

Manx Road Club Train 'Gage' it Right in Spain!

Having decided to pull out of Paris Nice at the last minute the Manx Road Club pro team decided to head to Mercia in Spain for a week of intensive training and hill work to fine tune their form for the all important Ramsey Bakery Handicap this coming Sunday. Their last race came down to a sprint, did the Road Club get their man to the front, our reporter in Spain has more...

Last Sunday morning, the Manx Road Club endurance squad joined around 60 local riders in the area of Murcia, Spain. The roll out started in a town called Pillar where a three mile drag settled everyone down and in this particular case the Road Club lads were dictating the pace whilst the Spanish watched with an evil eye.

An early break by Big Dave and a local rider at one stage had over 30secs on the chasing pack. A short steep climb followed by a fast run around the enormous lake brought the group back together. Such was the pace, the main group now numbered around 20 riders. A 10 mile stretch of flat road running next to the waterway followed, prompted Trevor Kirkwood to get away with a couple of the Spaniards only to be eventually caught on the next tiring drag. The Road club guys had regrouped and it was James Smetten that took over the pace making on the next long drive attempting to keep the Spanish at bay, Big Dave clipped onto a climbers wheel with three miles to go and produced a small gap, once on the long run in to the finish, Dave started the lead out followed by the Road club train, the final sprint was hotly contested so we are still waiting for confirmation of birthday boy Pete Gage taking the win as the photo finish takes three weeks to develop!

Pictured left to right: lead out man and kilo rider Dave Taylor, prologue specialist James Smetten, feared sprinter Peter Gage, climbing specialists Peter Doyle and Trevor Kirkwood plus 'Eagle of the Mountains' Neil Bellhouse
